Rochester Airfield: Lib Dems “Gagged”.

The Liberal Democrats have been barred from asking a question about Rochester Airfield at the next council meeting. Cllr Geoff Juby had submitted a question for the meeting next Thursday asking if there were any plans to install tarmac runways at the airfield. The airfield is based on a field in Rochester and currently does not have tarmac runways.

Cllr Geoff Juby, Leader of the Liberal Democrat group, comments:

“It’s absolutely disgraceful that the council has banned me from asking a question on Rochester Airfield. The plans for new runways on the site have been discussed on the TV programme Inside Out a couple of weeks ago. I know there is a local election going but still I can’t understand why this question can’t be asked, as it affects all of Medway.

The public have a right to know what is happening at the airfield. The public consider it to be a green space and should be told if it is going to be completely industrialised. They also have a right to know who is paying for these new runways, as the council owns the property. If the council is planning on adding new tarmac runways to the site then the people of Medway should be consulted first. After all this can only add to the noise that the airfield already makes.”

Medway Council write-off £1/4m in Council tax.

Medway Council has written-off £278,000 of council tax as uncollectable in 2006/07. Overall English Councils wrote off more than £130m of unpaid council tax last year, according to figures from the department for communities and Local Government.

In comparison Ashford Council only wrote off £4,000 over the same period. In Kent as a whole £3,299,000 of council tax was written off. Medway Council had the 4th highest amount of written-off council tax in Kent, with Thanet being the worst performer.

Cllr Geoff Juby, Leader of the Liberal Democrat group, comments:

“These figures are shocking. How can the council write-off this much council tax as „uncollectable‟ when the council is struggling to find money for vital services. It‟s not right that the council is letting some people get away with not paying their fair share of council tax. The council should be doing everything they can to collect this money. If they can do it in Ashford,

Clegg Says No to Kingsnorth and Airport Expansion

The Leader of the Liberal Democrats has ruled out a new generation of dirty coal fired power stations and Airport expansion.

Nick Clegg made the announcements at his party’s Conference this week in Bournemouth, making the Lib Dems the only mainstream political party opposed to Kingsnorth and opposed to a new Airport in the Thames Gateway.

Nick Clegg announced: “Together we are going to have to use less energy. And much less dirty energy. It’s the only way to stop the growing threat of disastrous climate change. There must be no third runway at Heathrow, no expansion of Stansted. And for power stations – no Kingsnorth, no more dirty coal.”

Liberal Democrats in Medway have repeatedly opposed the new coal-fired power station proposed at Kingsnorth in Hoo.

Rochester & Strood’s Parliamentary Spokesman Geoff Juby added: “The Prime Minister is expected to make a decision on Kingsnorth soon. If it is given approval it will open the floodgates for a further half dozen coal fired power stations, locking us into a high carbon energy policy which will cause catastrophic climate change.”

Employment Costs

Part time workers with children or older people, even if only paid for a few hours a week, are going to face a £28 charge for registering with the Independent Safeguarding Authority.  Against officer recommendations, at Wednesday’s meeting of the Employment Matters Committee the Conservative ruling group voted to impose this charge on employees.  Cllr Maureen Ruparel pointed out that for some people, like playground assistants, this would represent a considerable amount of money, she says ‘This could well be a whole week’s wages for someone trying to supplement a low household income by a few hours care work a week’.  When told about the charge, Cllr Geoff Juby, the Liberal Democrat finance spokesperson said, ‘not only is this an example of what low paid workers can expect from the Conservatives, it shows how  the present Labour Government is putting more and more regulation on local councils without adequate funding.”
